Admittedly, I’m a little biased toward natural latex mattresses because we sell them but bear with me and you'll see this is no sales hype.
The facts tell us natural latex mattress are better for people with allergies because they're anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and hypoallergenic. Additionally, latex relieves pressure points so you don’t toss and turn as much as you would on an innerspring mattress. Less tossing and turning means you get more deep REM sleep, which helps your body’s immune system recover. Those are the facts, now for the real life experience.
I’ve read all the articles, gathered enough information over the past three years to be an expert on the various types of natural latex mattresses but have never actually owned one until recently. I won’t tell you what brand because that would sound like a shameless plug for our products but suffice to say it’s a simple, all natural latex mattress. No pillowtop, no extra padding, no luxurious fabric covering. But it has saved my sanity.
I had been walking the halls with stress and worry; one slight noise or bounce from my husband turning over, and my thoughts would kick in keeping me up for hours. My husband snores, not loudly but enough to wake me intermittently all night. No deep REMs for me, I was waking up tired, cranky, and downright mean spirited. Some nights I’d be up for hours, and as these sleepless nights turned into sleepless weeks, my moods were deteriorating from "down in the dumps" to serious depression.
Then our new latex mattress arrived. It is a simple three-layer natural latex core surrounded by an encasing of organic wool quilted into an organic cotton cover. No pillowtop, no extra padding, and no luxurious fabrics.
The first night we both slept so well, neither of us woke up until morning. The next night, we experienced the same peaceful sleep. After a few nights, we started giggling about how eager we were to go to bed (and not for the reasons you’re thinking). One night I awoke briefly, realizing my husband’s snoring had subsided to a low hum rather than deep rasping. When I say I awoke briefly, I mean I rolled over and went right back to sleep.
We’ve been sleeping on our new mattress for three months now and my mood has improved dramatically. My husband no longer wakes up with a sore back. In fact, he has a cold right now and hacking cough, so I’ve been sentenced to sleeping in the guest room with its hard innerspring mattress. Guess what? I’m not sleeping again.
I'll take your shameless plug if you don't mind emailing the name of the mattress you wrote of in this post. (That is, I'll take it if you are stilling loving the mattress. We need a new mattress and recent research steered me quickly away from the conventional one we were oh-so-close to purchasing. Any help/guidance would be much appreciated.
Chris: No problem. The mattress we sleep on is what used to be called North Star Beds but is now our Savvy Rest Serenity, in Talalay latex. We still love the mattress. I have configured my side to be on the softer side with a firm base, medium middle, and soft top layer. My husband wanted a firmer mattress so on his side we put all three layers of firm.
