We’re big fans of Inspired House magazine and the October 2005 issue arrived last week chocked full of great ideas to create environments that are healthier for human beings.
First, there’s an article featuring the interiors of Sarah Susanka’s Not So Big House Showhouse at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida. She offers suggestions on fabrics from Hemp to organic cotton, Tencel, or flax; flooring ideas from Eco hardwood flooring to Marmoleum, what works best and why; low VOC paints and where to purchase; wood furniture made without glue; ceramic tiles, veneer trims, and a list of manufacturers. The article is a real keeper for the renovation library.
Check out one of my favorite sections: Get the Goods: Cover Yourself Know the facts before choosing a comforter by Debra Judge Silber You'll find a great comparison of comforters/duvets (the names are synonymous for the same thing). Silber provides a helpful chart comparing all the filling options: down, synthetics, natural fibers, Duck down, Microfibers, gel fibers, clustered fibers, plant-based fibers, and silk. Only wish she had held an opinion on which were more favorable and why but she does point out the allergy implications of some. She also covers (whoops) how to understand weight, tick and construction. Great resource for doing your homework before making this important and expensive purchase.
