InnovativeHOME Magazine – my new must read magazine

I was checking out at the grocery store last week and spied the preview issue of this very slick magazine focused on sustainable home design. I’m pouring over every article and never get bored.

According to the publisher, InnovativeHOME is designed for architects and interior designers but as a consumer, I found it chocked full of inspiring ideas for greener living.

The section on modular housing was interesting and opened new possibilities for building a new home or even renovating without breaking the bank, and a marriage. Perhaps there’s hope for our new addition, if we build it modular. I like the idea of our new master bedroom coming completely assembled and installed in weeks rather than years.

Subscription is pricey at $37.50 for just four issues and that’s with the discount but it looks to be a real addition to the library rather than another magazine to take up space in the landfill.

A Healthy Home: Beautiful Interiors that Enhance the Environment and Your Well-Being" by Jackie Craven – a book as beautiful as it is helpful

The resources for creating a healthy home are on the rise, and getting better. This book by home renovator interior designer and former English teacher Jackie Craven is sure to catch the eye of domestic diva Martha Stewart. Accurate and helpful content combined with exceptional design makes this a must-have coffee table book.

Craven points out that "one of the great ironies of our age is the very technologies intended to enhance our well being often undermine our health." Unlike some books in this genre, the tone is positive and directs the reader to alternative materials that are both beautiful and natural. She presents interiors that delight the eye and bring harmony to your body and soul. Well worth the price of $25.

What’s the difference between Talalay latex and Dunlop latex?

Latex mattresses are very popular right now and their rise to prominence has resulted in the battle of the Talalay vs. Dunlop latex. It’s a silly argument, since it’s like comparing apples to oranges.

The terms Talalay and Dunlop are simply the methods by which latex is manufactured and has little to do with the quality of the end product.

It’s more important to find out what ingredients are put into the latex foam before, during and after either process is used to make the latex core. Ingredients to watch out for are harmful chemicals, toxic flame retardants, dyes, and substances that can break the latex down over time.

In the Talalay process air is extracted from the latex foam and the latex is flash frozen, resulting in an "airier" latex. If you like a softer mattress, buy one made with Talalay latex.

In the Dunlop process, air is not extracted, and there is no freeze stage. The latex cell structure is less "airy". If you prefer a firm mattress, this is the latex core for you.
