We are bombarded with images and warnings every day of the chemicals, toxins and carcinogens lurking in our everyday purchases. We strive to buy natural and organic products, but how do we avoid those that are just manipulatively labeled?
In the last decade, the demand for natural and organic alternatives for everything from food, to cleaners, to couches and mattresses has skyrocketed. With this surge in demand, companies have found creative ways to market their not-so-natural products as "green." This is called greenwashing.
In order to combat these deceitful efforts, Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families has devised the Mind the Store Campaign. This initiative focuses on large stores and retail chains, encouraging them to switch out their chemical-laden products with safer alternatives. The idea is that having healthier options available all the time will limit the greenwashing occurring at the manufacturing level.
