Latex mattresses are very popular right now and their rise to prominence has resulted in the battle of the Talalay vs. Dunlop latex. It’s a silly argument, since it’s like comparing apples to oranges.

The terms Talalay and Dunlop are simply the methods by which latex is manufactured and has little to do with the quality of the end product.

It’s more important to find out what ingredients are put into the latex foam before, during and after either process is used to make the latex core. Ingredients to watch out for are harmful chemicals, toxic flame retardants, dyes, and substances that can break the latex down over time.

Still want the details?

In the Talalay process air is extracted from the latex foam and the latex is flash frozen, resulting in an “airier” latex. If you like a softer mattress, buy one made with Talalay latex.

In the Dunlop process, air is not extracted, and there is no freeze stage. The latex cell structure is less “airy”. If you prefer a firm mattress, this is the latex core for you.

I am severely allergic to latex- the systemic type of allergy which can result in anaphylaxis and death. Where can I find detailed information about latex core mattresses and type 1 latex allergies?

You are correct, niether are superier. Dunlop is denser, which makes it a bit firmer overall than Talalay. Talalay is a good choice if you’d like a pillowy-soft surface feel.

Actually, they are not the same. The Talalay process adds chemicals that are not used in the Dunlop process. They are acrylate resins, diphenyl diisocyanate, phenol-melamine resins, phenol-urea, polyvinyl acetate and styrene-butadiene copolymer. (Read the FAQs on the Talalay Global website.) That’s why Talalay latex can not be considered 100% natural or certified organic. Even if they get their latex sap from a certified organic source, it stops being organic and all natural when they go through the Talalay manufacturing process. What some companies do is say that they use 100% Talalay latex, which is misleading, to say the least.
