The Market

  • Last year, 50 billion bottles of water were consumed worldwide.
  • The U.S. market alone used nearly 60% of all the bottled water produced in the world.
  • By the end of 2017, the commercial market for bottled water will overcome the market for soft drinks.
  • Bottled water generates upwards to US$14.2 billion in sales in the U.S. alone.

The Impact

  • Bottled water is tap water.
  • Tap water — hence bottled water — typically contain traces of industrial chemicals, pesticides, lead, parasites, bacteria and hormones.
  • Bottled water is filtered from tap water almost exclusively for the purpose of improving taste.
  • Most plastic bottles leak dangerous chemicals and toxins into the water they contain: BPAs, bisphenols, EA, etc.
  • Bottled water is not regulated or tested by the FDA or any other government agency.
  • It takes 3 times the amount of water it contains to produce a single bottle.
  • Every second, 1500 empty plastic bottles are disposed of in the U.S.
  • 30 billion bottles = 1.5 million tons of plastic thrown back in the environment.
